Commission wants EU's data pooled

EU executive launches bid for single security database by 2012.

The European Commission today adopted a proposal to set up a single agency to manage data collected for databases used by border guards and law-enforcement agencies.

Among the information that will be managed are details of passports, visas and fingerprints.

The proposed agency would manage data for the Schengen Information System (SIS II), the Visa Information System (VIS), the Eurodac system for fingerprint data and other large-scale IT systems.

The agency, which the Commission wants to become operational in 2012, needs to be approved by EU governments and the European Parliament before it can be set up.
