Eurogroup meetings

Zapatero said today that governments may revive the practice of holding meetings of the Eurogroup at the level of heads of state and government. Eurogroup meetings are normally attended by finance ministers from the 16 members of the eurozone.

National leaders last met in the Eurogroup in October 2008 in order to co-ordinate a response to the unfolding chaos on the financial markets. French President Nicolas Sarkozy, who hosted and chaired that meeting, was known to be keen to continue the practice, but was rebuffed by other member states.

Zapatero said, however, that “this idea is still alive”.

“It is being said that it [the Eurogroup] should meet [again] at some point at level of heads of state and government,” he said.
