ŠTEFAN FÜLE

Enlargment and European neighbourhood policy

Nationality: Czech

Political Affiliation: PES

Previous job: EU affairs minister

Age: 47

On Turkey:
“Let me be very clear on Turkey and its accession process, to reply to the question whether I can imagine Turkey becoming a member: Yes, I can.”

On developing relations with neighbours:
“Unless it is a common endeavour, we will fail in our backyard, whether it is in the south or in the east.”

On the distinction between neighbourhood policy and enlargement:
“There is a clear line between the two policies. Putting them to the left or the right does not mean making the line thicker.”

Moment of disorientation:
Asked about Montenegro, Füle talked about Bosnia and Herzegovina. “And you were speaking English,” he told the questioner on realising his mistake.

Helpful question:
Zuzana Roithová, a fellow Czech, asked what level of security clearance NATO had given Füle. The highest possible, the former ambassador to NATO answered – a distinction shared by few Czechs, he pointed out.

Unasked question of the day:
About the mysterious events surrounding a car accident in Lithuania in 2000, which was followed by a probe by the Czech Republic's National Audit Office.
