JOHN DALLI

Health and consumer policy

Nationality: Maltese

Political Affiliation: EPP

Previous job: social policy minister

Age: 61

Most random question
“Will you support a kids' university for cooking?” asked Dutch Liberal Toine Manders.
Dalli, who misheard the first time, uncertainly decided this was a “grand idea” before remarking that in his country children learn to cook before they get to university age.

Declaration of turf war
Have you agreed with José Manuel Barroso that you will lead consumer policy, asked German socialist Evelyne Gephardt, who noted that Viviane Reding, the justice commissioner, said that she was responsible for that at her hearing.

“I am the commissioner responsible for all consumer issues,” said Dalli. “These are the discussions I have had with Mr Barroso when he explained the portfolio to me. I am sure that this will be the case.”
