A weaker Commission?

Whose fault it is that the European commissioners in Barroso II are performing below both hope and expectation?

Fact file
VIVIANE REDING

Justice, fundamental rights and citizenship

Nationality: Luxembourgeois

Political Affiliation: EPP

Previous job: European commissioner for the information society

Age: 58

Challenge to MEPs
“I submit to you that if you have nothing to hide you do not have a life.” Greek MEP Stavros Lambrinidis on the importance of protecting internet users' data.

Stickiest point
Reding appeared uncomfortable when pressed by British members of the legal affairs committee to explain how the UK common law system could fit in with her plans for a civil code.
“I am not a lawyer,” she said, adding that “common law systems are very respectable systems that we should not leave out”.

Most stringent critic
Dutch liberal MEP Sophia in 't Veld: “You seem to hold a fairly minimalist and passive view of the role of the EU on fundamental rights.”

Most entertaining moments
The repeated disruption of the hearing by Hungarian non-aligned MEP Krisztina Morva, who protested at not being allocated any questions.
