Globalising NATO

NATO is becoming an alliance that exists to empower – to offer assistance and partnership – as much as to overpower.

Fact file

TURKEY-ARMENIA

The government of Armenia has suspended ratification of protocols for a normalisation of ties with Turkey.

The protocols were signed in October in a bid to overcome a freeze on relations since the early 1990s, when Armenian forces captured Armenian-inhabited regions of Azerbaijan, a Turkish ally. Armenia has accused Turkey of stalling on implementing the accords. The governments of both Turkey and Armenia face stiff domestic opposition against a normalisation of relations.

The Armenian suspension is a serious blow to the process and comes just days before Armenians around the world mark the 95th anniversary of massacres by the Ottoman Turks that most experts view as a genocide. US President Barack Obama is scheduled to hold a speech on the matter on Saturday but is expected not to use the term genocide.
