The Commission yesterday (3 August) also allocated an additional €40m to respond to the deteriorating food situation in the Sahel region and in Sudan. The funds will help feed an additional 500,000 people threatened by starvation until the harvest begins in the autumn, according to the Commission. The Commission estimates that more than 10 million people in the Sahel, mainly in Niger, are threatened by hunger.
The EU will also provide €35m in aid to Somalia over the next 18 months. Around 3.2m people – close to half of the country's population – need emergency relief. Another €10m will help Somali refugees in Kenya. Zimbabwe will receive aid worth €15m over the next 12 months.
