MEPs reject Romanian candidate for Court of Auditors

By Toby Vogel   -  27.09.2012 / 11:15 CET
Former European commissioner Leonard Orban gets caught up in controversy over Romanian government and corruption.
The European Parliament's budgetary-control committee has rejected Leonard Orban as Romania's new member of the EU's Court of Auditors over concerns that his appointment could create a conflict of interest.

Ingeborg Grässle, a centre-right German MEP on the committee, said that pressure was growing on all levels of the EU to unfreeze EU structural funds for the country. All structural funds have been suspended over concerns about the lack of accountability systems in Romania and the levels of corruption in the country.

Orban, a former European commissioner for multilingualism, is currently Europe minister in the government of Victor Ponta, Romania's centre-left prime minister. Ponta's campaign to consolidate his power ahead of a parliamentary election in December has angered many centre-right politicians in Europe.

Orban is a non-party technocrat and also served as Europe minister in Romania's previous, centre-right government.
