Democratic Rally leader is favourite to be president

Nicos Anastasiades looks likely to replace Demetris Christofias as the president of Cyprus when Greek Cypriots go to the polls over the next two weeks. Anastasiades could use his position as leader of the majority party in parliament as a springboard to become president in the first round this Sunday (17 February), though victory in a run-off on 24 February appears more likely. Three opinion polls in recent days put Anastasiades at over or close to 40%, and his trajectory has been upward.
