The experience of 1989 has some happy lessons for the Middle East – and some worrying parallels.

The message from the superpower was clear. You are our allies. We understand your difficulties. But it is time to change. That was the story of 1989, as the old grey men in Warsaw, Prague, Budapest and Sofia felt decades-old certainties eroded by the wind of perestroika and glasnost, and the awakening of their own public opinion.
