Auditors elect greyhaired president in tense contest

The European Court of Auditors has a new president. The Austrian member of the court Hubert Weber was elected ahead of rival candidates, Dutchman Maarten Engwirda and Portugal's Vitor Manuel da Silva Caldeira. Weber is a safe, undramatic choice. The 65-year-old is unlikely to make waves, either within the court or with other EU institutions. His presentations to the Parliament's budgetary control committee have not yet set the world alight.
