Barroso must act to deflect row with Parliament

MEMBERS of the European Parliament have raised the stakes in the approval of the new European Commission by refusing to back one member of the Barroso team. They rejected Italian Rocco Buttiglione for the justice, freedom and security post. They warned they were not convinced of the suitability of the Hungarian László Kovács for the energy brief. They hinted that the Netherlands' Neelie Kroes (competition), Dane Mariann Fischer Boel (agriculture) and Latvian Ingrida Udre (taxation) were in danger of not being approved.
