Cartoon calendar

24.01.2008 / 00:00 CET
Following last week's item on the 2008 desk companion of the EU's anti-fraud office (OLAF), it seems only fair to mention the 2008 wall calendar of the EPP-ED group. It features cartoons by a Polish artist, Paweł Pyzik, of some of the group's MEPs, intended to illustrate policy priorities. The MEP figures are not identified (perhaps naming the chosen 12 was deemed too divisive) though most are recognisable.
The October picture shows money falling from the sky into a black hole, which Valdis Dombrovskis is trying to fill. Rodi Kratsa-Tsagaropoulou is depicted surrounded by planes, trains and a boat, which might be a nod to EPP-ED transport policy, or might, since it appears on the page for August, be an indication that the MEPs will be off on their holidays.
January's picture is of a Jacek Saryusz-Wolski figure holding a ladder. This is intended (we are assured) to illustrate the EPP-ED “reaching out to our neighbours”, though those who know Saryusz-Wolski might assume that he was removing the ladder to make life more difficult for his political rivals.
