Taskforce meeting

The discussion between finance ministers on supervision of financial markets will be preceded by a meeting on 12 July of the EU's taskforce on reforming economic governance. The taskforce, which is chaired by Herman Van Rompuy, the president of the European Council, contains one representative from each member state, in almost all cases its finance minister.
The meeting is expected to agree details of an annual EU-level review of the budget plans of member states (known as the ‘European semester'). The agreement, to be endorsed formally by the finance ministers' meeting the next day, will be used by the Commission as the basis for a legislative proposal in September.
The taskforce is also to discuss what sanctions that can be applied against member states that have excessively high levels of debt or run large budget deficits.
