Cyprus's ministries for ill-health

24.04.2008 / 10:17 CET
Markos Kyprianou is missing Brussels.
It seems that Markos Kyprianou has been suffering since giving up being European commissioner for health to become Cyprus's foreign minister. His problem is that all those EU campaigns against smoking have not made much impact in his home country. Even his own foreign ministry building is contaminated by smoking politicians, officials and journalists – even though, as it is a public building, smoking is banned. The minister had a struggle to stop one of his secretaries from putting out an ash-tray in his office. You see, he's already missing Brussels (famed for its clean air). If resolution of the Cyprus question is to be achieved in smoke-filled rooms, then count Kyprianou out.
