EMERGENCY AID

The European Commission on 22 December allocated €5 million in emergency aid to respond to the post-electoral violence in Côte d'Ivoire. The aid will provide relief to around 100,000 people, primarily health services, water, food, sanitation and shelter. The UN estimates that, as of yesterday (5 January), more than 22,000 Ivorians had crossed into neighbouring Liberia.
Since 2002, Côte d'Ivoire has received emergency aid worth €135m to deal with internal instability and refugee flows from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea.
Under the 10th European Development Fund, the EU has allocated €255m in development aid for 2008-13. That aid is not in question at present. The World Bank, by contrast, has shut its country office and suspended all aid to Côte d'Ivoire.
