New EU man in Bosnia

Austrian diplomat Valentin Inzko was yesterday (11 March) appointed European Union Special Representative (EUSR) to Bosnia and Herzegovina after the US government dropped its opposition to the choice. He was appointed by written consent of the EU member states more than two weeks after foreign ministers had backed him on 23 February.
A spokesman for Michael Spindelegger, Austria's foreign minister, confirmed the appointment yesterday, as did diplomats in the office of Javier Solana, EU foreign policy chief. Both sides stressed that the appointment would not be made public until the Peace Implementation Council meets in Sarajevo on 25 March to appoint an international high representative to Bosnia. Since 2002, the high representative has also served as EUSR.
