Time to devote more energy to growth
|

The EU's colour-coded ‘A-G' energy labels for fridges, washing machines and other white goods are due for a modest makeover, with MEPs expected to give their approval to the new energy-labelling directive (19 May). The biggest change is the extension of the ‘A' class, with three new categories from A+ to A+++ for the best-performing products.
The new scale will run from A+++ - D, replacing the current A-G scale. But the new system has attracted accusations of ‘grade inflation', from Green MEPs and consumer groups, who argued that consumers will be confused, because ‘A' is no longer the most energy-efficient product. They lost the argument, as a majority of national governments insisted on expanding the ‘A' class.
