Maltese cash flow

10.01.2008 / 00:00 CET

Lawrence Gonzi, Malta's prime minister and finance minister, twice failed to withdraw euro notes from a cash machine that had been set up in front of the television cameras on the waterfront of Valletta, the capital city.
The Bank of Valletta, which provided the portable machine, explained that the fault was due to an “alignment” problem caused by the large crowds that gathered to watch Gonzi's historic withdrawal.
But Maltese observers offered an alternative explanation, claiming that the prime minister's wife Kate had somehow exceeded the couple's cash withdrawal limit.
