ALSO ON THE AGENDA

Member states should develop greater military autonomy for the EU, says a report by Roberto Gualtieri, an Italian centre-left MEP, due to be voted on on Thursday (12 May). It calls for the EU to introduce “smarter defence spending” to pool and share defence resources.

MEPs are expected to back a legislative deal with the Council of Ministers to simplify labelling rules for textile products. A compromise was reached on 20 April on rules that will force manufacturers to state whether clothing is made from animal-derived materials such as leather or fur.

The Parliament is likely to approve a plan to merge its register of lobbyists with that of the Commission, to debate free-trade talks with Japan and India, and to approve new trade preferences for Pakistan.
