No thaw for Tusk

06.12.2007 / 00:00 CET
Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk's hopes of reaching a civilised modus vivendi with Lech Kaczynski, Poland's president, suffered a setback last week.
Tusk may have ousted Lech's twin brother, Jarosław, in October's elections but he has not been able to get rid of Anna Fotyga, who used to be the foreign minister.
In that role she was Lord High Executioner of the Kaczynskis' aggressive foreign policy. She was particularly abrasive in her handling of relations with Russia and Germany but showed herself equally ready to pick a fight with the EU. Lech has just appointed Fotyga as head of the presidential chancellery, ensuring that she continues to make life difficult for Tusk and Radosław Sikorski, who is the new foreign minister.
