Pöttering no ornithologist

22.03.2007 / 00:00 CET
The wisdom of Hans-Gert Pöttering. The president of the European Parliament found himself presiding over a debate on bird hunting in Malta which breaches EU law. He offered the following commentary: “I wonder why there is so much bird hunting in Malta. There are so few trees there. Are there so many birds?”
Well, president, not as many birds as there would be if the Maltese stopped taking pot-shots at the passing passerines as they try to migrate across the Mediterranean.
Perhaps next week Hans-Gert will ask: “I wonder why there are so many chairs in the European Parliament's hemicycle. Are there so many MEPs?”
