Gilles de Kerchove has a bit of a daredevil streak in him. The 51-year-old Belgian has in the past enjoyed throwing himself out of planes and off mountains in pursuit of his parachuting and hang-gliding hobbies. His new role as EU counter-terrorism co-ordinator is a similar leap into the unknown given the high-profile nature of the job and the difficulty of doing it with so few powers.
