Romanian rumpus over Kosovo

28.02.2008 / 00:00 CET
The unilateral declaration of independence by Kosovo triggered violence on the streets of Belgrade, but it also brought Romania to the verge of a political crisis (not that it takes much, since crisis is a near permanent condition of politics in Bucharest). The Romanian government is fiercely opposed to Kosovo's independence... except, that is, for the junior partner in the government coalition, the ethnic Hungarian party, UDMR, whose leaders insisted that Romania must recognise Kosovo immediately. Some voices from the UDMR party unhelpfully predicted that Kosovo would be an example to other regions populated by ethnic minorities across Europe, which might seek independence or autonomy.
Outraged senior politicians urged Calin Popescu-Tariceanu, the Liberal prime minister, to kick UDMR out of the governing coalition. Ludovic Orban, the transport minister, was the first to ask for the ethnic Hungarians' party to be excluded from the government. And yes, Ludovic is a brother of Leonard Orban, Romania's European commissioner, who, lest you had forgotten, is in charge of multilingualism.
