Emerging ship technologies

  • Low-risk ships allow better risk-control options, new structural designs providing improved collision and grounding resistance and damage stability control. 
    Low-energy, low-emissions ships use efficient propulsion technologies - fuel cells and renewables, and hybrid drives with intelligent power networks - integrated into innovative hull forms to reduce power requirements.
    Autonomous ships with next-generation modular control systems and communications technology will enable wireless monitoring and control functions on and off board, including advanced decision support systems to operate ships remotely under semi or fully autonomous control.
    Integrated transport chains in and around Europe with fast, highly automated ship/shore interfaces and sophisticated links to shore-based and inland transport modes will provide the framework for “motorways of the sea”.
    “Extreme” vessels with specialised structures and performance to cope with conditions in offshore industries, harsh climates and hitherto unnavigable waters.
    “Seven-day ship design” to allow European yards to provide detailed designs in world-leading minimum times, using IT to combine standard and tailor-made designs with minimal technical and commercial risk.
    Flexible production processes in shipyards that have perfected full process control over distributed production locations, minimised retooling for new designs, and reduced time-to-market will allow Europe to be a world leader in energy-efficient shipbuilding.
    An intelligent integrated transport network for vessel and cargo tracking and accessible to all operators and users will enable efficient planning, booking, simulation, routing and control of cargo across different European transport modes.
