Sex appeal in Parliament?

19.03.2009 / 00:00 CET
MEPs who set the tabloids a-flutter.

A women's magazine called Brigitte is searching for a ‘German Obama' and has nominated six politicians.

The line-up includes Alexander Alvaro, a Liberal MEP known for his outspoken views on the European Parliament's civil liberties committee. The magazine lauds his dark eyes, his habit of having his top shirt-button undone and his surname, which “sounds like a Latin lover”. Meanwhile, Elena Basescu, daughter of Traian Basescu, Romania's president, has been named as a candidate for the Parliament elections. Aged 28 and a model, the Romanian press has been revelling in her looks, tumultuous private life and occasional grammatical errors since her father became president in 2002.

She is currently a stagiaire in the Parliament, working in the office of Iosif Matula, an MEP from her father's Democrat Liberal Party. But if the elections go well, she can start choosing her own stagiaires.
