THE Commission announced this week that it had opened a formal investigation into plans by Belgium's Flemish regional government to give car manufacturer Ford aid worth 6.5 million euro to support the company's 310 million euro investment in producing a new model of its Transit van at a plant in Genk. Officials have questioned whether the aid complies with the Union's rules on subsidies to the car industry.
