That itchy feeling spreads from east to west

The Czech humourist Karel Capek saw himself as the defender of a kaleidoscope of distinct, miniature worlds. “The creator of Europe,” he wrote in a letter to the New York Times in 1926, “split her up into little parts, so that our hearts could find joy not in size but in plurality.”
