The need to defuse the Middle East

Tensions between the Islamic and non-Islamic worlds are considerable and rising (as are tensions within the Islamic world). There is a tendency to play down these tensions as speaking publicly about a clash of civilisations or religions may be inflammatory and even self-fulfilling.
