  • 20 May: European Parliament President Pat Cox receives the Charlemagne prize for his contribution to EU enlargement;

  • 21 May: EU-Russia summit takes place in Moscow. Discussions set to include a compromise on Russian membership of the World Trade Organization;

  • 24 May: European Court of Justice will examine the Commission's appeal against the Court of First Instance (CFI) decision to overrule its veto of the merger of Tetra Laval and Sidel;

  • 25-27 May: CFI hearings on Commission's decision to block the merger of US industrial giants General Electric and Honeywell;

  • 26 May: Commission weekly meeting. Agenda includes a ‘plan of action' for translation needs of EU institutions, public finances and management of the Union's borders;

  • 27-28 May: EU Education, Youth and Culture Council in Brussels will address policies regarding the new series of education and youth programmes.

  • 27-28 May: Mexico hosts third EU-Latin America and Caribbean Summit. Some 56 heads of state and government from both regions are expected to attend the summit, which will pave the way for progress in the areas of social cohesion and regional and sub-regional integration. Anti-capitalism protests are also expected to take place.

    EU environment ministers called for greater efforts to halt biodiversity loss this week, but could not agree on whether they should back the ambition with hard cash.

    EU leaders will next week call on the Council of Ministers and the European Parliament to conclude a deal on the European Commission's proposed climate and energy package during 2008.

    An offer by Germany's largest energy company to sell off its transmission network has raised the European Commission's hopes of getting more competition on the EU's energy market.

    Chairwoman of Parliament's industry committee says MEPs are opposed to creation of a European telecoms market authority.
