Diana Wallis was born in Hitchin in 1954.
She qualified as a lawyer in 1983, and specialised in European commercial litigation.
She was elected to the European Parliament in 1999 and has been a vice-president of the Parliament since 2007, responsible for transparency issues.
Wallis has been involved in the creation of the European Citizen's Initiative (ECI), the creation of a single EU lobby register, tougher code of conduct rules for MEPs, and efforts to improve the attendance of MEPs at plenary debates.
On the legal affairs committee, Wallis has drafted reports on European contract law and improving the legal rights of consumers and businesses in civil claims.
