Who's who of international terror groups

Below is a list of some of the key terrorist groups around the world, based on a report drawn up by the US department of state in April 1997Abu Nidal organisation (ANO) aka: Black SeptemberAn international terrorist organisation which split from the PLO in 1974, it has killed or injured almost 900 people in 20 countries. Major attacks include Rome and Vienna airports in December 1985, PanAm flight 73 in September 1986, and a city of Poros day-excursion ship in Greece in July 1988. It has not attacked western targets since the late 1980s. It has several hundred members plus militia in Lebanon, but is currently based in Libya (where it receives support).
