Cyprus's divided history

 

1960: Cyprus gains independence from the UK. A constitutional republic is established.

1963: Intercommunal fighting after the President Marakios' proposal to constitutional amendments. Turkish Cypriots opposed.

1964: UN peacekeepers were deployed on the island

1974: Greek military junta sponsors a coup against Marakios. Turkey intervenes militarily and takes over the northern thirds of Cyprus.

1983: Turks unilaterally proclaim the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus.

2003: Borders between North and South open for the first time in 30 years.

2004: UN referendum for reunification (the Annan Plan). It was rejected by the Greek community (75%) and endorsed by the Turkish community (65%). The Republic of Cyprus joins the EU

2008: Another checkpoint in the capital Nicosia is opened. The presidents on each side are discussing how to reunify the island.

3 September 2008: UN-sponsored talks resume.
