Microsoft’s new battle with old enemy

Appeal against latest fines ‘to seek clarity; experts link case with battle for control of web.

Microsoft’s decision this month to up the stakes in its long-running battle with the European Commission vexed and puzzled in equal measure. The appeal against fresh penalties imposed by EU antitrust regulators in February came just when everyone thought the software firm had closed a chapter in its troubled regulatory history and adopted a more forward-looking approach in its relations with the Commission.
