New UK commissioner named

Catherine Ashton, a former parliamentary leader and advocate of social rights, will replace Peter Mandelson.

Catherine Ashton is to be the UK’s new member of the European Commission, replacing the departing Peter Mandelson. Little known to the UK public, she comes to Brussels with a reputation in political circles of quiet efficiency and strong advocacy of social rights.
