Out, but soon underground

Bosnia’s first attempt at a Gay Pride festival brought the lurking intolerance in Sarajevo out violently onto its streets.

Bosnia was due to hold its first Gay Pride festival last week. It never happened. Instead, what Sarajevo witnessed on 24 September were scenes of violence on what should have been the opening night, with football hooligans and members of Bosnia’s growing community of followers of the austere Wahhabi form of Islam leading the fight. Ten people were injured, among them two prominent journalists.
