Scotland’s timetable for EU membership

The plan to have an independent Scotland and for talks on EU membership to have been completed by 2016

Next year, the Scottish people will vote in a referendum on whether Scotland should be an independent nation. The formal authority for the referendum is an agreement signed last year between the Scottish and UK governments that acknowledges – as successive British governments have recognised – that if a majority in Scotland votes for independence this will be respected by the UK government.
