Stanishev to lead PES

Former Bulgarian prime minister named interim president of Party of European Socialists.

Sergei Stanishev, the chairman of the Bulgarian Socialist Party and a former prime minister of Bulgaria, has been elected interim president of the Party of European Socialists (PES).

Stanishev, who was prime minister of Bulgaria from 2005 to 2009, is taking over from Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, who announced he was stepping down as PES president on Tuesday (22 November).
