Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s prime minister, relies on timing and fortune, rather than vision.

Mariano Rajoy, Spain’s prime minister, is a keen cyclist, a patient, endurance type. El Pais’s cartoonist Peridis picked up on that interest and those traits days before Rajoy became prime minister last November, depicting a relaxed Rajoy, smoking a cigar, pedalling away from a fallen Alfredo Pérez Rubalcaba, the Socialist leader. But, yelled Rubalcaba, “Mariano, be careful with your prize” – a large, rough woman standing on the finishing line with a stick.
