The West’s best representative to the emerging north Africa does not come from western or southern Europe.

For veterans of 1989, watching the crisis in north Africa is a frustrating business. It is not just the sight of goons murdering unarmed demonstrators. It is also the feeling of helplessness and disgust at the timidity of countries that claim to believe in liberty, legality and openness.
