Alexander Graf Lambsdorff – a leading figure in the Free Democratic Party

Alexander Graf Lambsdorff is one of the most respected foreign-policy experts among German politicians of his generation and a leading figure in the Free Democratic Party, junior partner in Chancellor Angela Merkel’s ruling coalition. Yet it is Guido Westerwelle, a lightweight former leader of the FDP with no discernible interest in foreign policy, who represents Germany around the world, while Lambsdorff languishes as the accidental leader of the German Liberals in the European Parliament. The gaffe-prone Westerwelle, who appears perpetually to be on the brink of being replaced as foreign minister, compares unfavourably to the unflappable and eloquent Lambsdorff.
