Ahead of the European year on healthy and active ageing, László Andor, European commissionner for employment, social affairs and inclusion, will present the Commission's view on how Europe can transform the challenge of ageing into an opportunity.

Stephen Hughes MEP, member of the social affairs committee, and vice-president of the group of socialists and democrats in the European Parliament, will give a perspective from the European Parliament on the Commission's proposals.

H.E. Kojiro Shiojiri, ambassador of Japan to the European Union, will share the Japanese experience and explain what Europe can learn from it.

The issue: a decade to get back on track

Europe's population is ageing fast, and the decline of Europe's working-age population is likely to start in 2012, while the over-60 population will continue to rise by about two million people a year, according to Eurostat figures, a pace twice as fast as before 2007.

These trends are not new, and represent a formidable challenge for EU policymakers...
