 Programme

Day 1: Friday 12 February 2010

10:00 – 12:00 Student tour of European Union Institutions

14:00 – 15:30

Seminar Programme

Seminar One: European and international studies
Venue: Committee of the Regions

The position of Europe in a changing world

The European Union has long been viewed as “an economic giant, but a political pygmy” on the world stage. Is this still the case, and if so, is it bound to be so? The EU's member states have been painfully divided over the war in Iraq and over relations with Russia. But at the same time, in the face of such challenges as climate change, the EU has been perceived as a global leader. With the US leadership newly invigorated and Asia growing more assertive, the EU faces tough competition. How can Europe stay influential in an increasingly multipolar world? Is the Lisbon treaty the key to a stronger European presence on the world stage? Will the development of a dedicated diplomatic service give a new coherence to EU foreign policy? Can institutional solutions make up for political will? What opportunities would this offer to young Europeans?

Speakers:

  • Welcome speech: Dr Gerhard Stahl, secretary-general, Committee of the Regions
  • Professor Erwan Lannon, director of studies, European interdisciplinary studies department,  College of Europe
  • Professor Richard Beardsworth, director, research center, division of international politics, economics and public policy, American University of Paris
  • Jon Worth, author of Euroblog
  • Lutz Gullner, spokesperson for Catherine Ashton, High representative for foreign and security policy, European Commission
  • Moderator: Toby Vogel, reporter on foreign affairs, international trade, defence and development, European Voice.

14:00 – 15:30

Seminar Two: Business and Law
Venue: Committee of the Regions

Comparing business environments in Europe, the US and Asia

Europe is said to be lagging behind other regions of the world in its capacity for innovation and its culture of entrepreneurship. Asia's importance for the world economy is growing, and the US is still the driving economic force. How should Europeans adapt to face the challenges of global competition, ageing societies, climate change and recession? What values should Europe preserve? What kind of regulatory framework does Europe need and how will it affect competitiveness? Has deregulation reached its limits? Or can a new framework shape a new culture?

Speakers:

  • Welcome speech: Luc Van den Brande, outgoing president, Committee of the Regions
  • Richard Boncy, professor of corporate law & governance and of international business development, IE
  • Anjanette H. Raymond, lecturer in international commercial law and co-director of LLM programme,  Queen Mary University of London
  • Ann Mettler, executive director, The Lisbon Council
  • Roderick Abbott, former deputy director general of the WTO
  • Moderator: Tim King, editor, European Voice
