EU Studies Fair 2011

Report from 2010 EU Studies Fair - Mastering the EU education market

 Programme

Day 1: Friday 11 February 2011

10:00 – 12:00 Student tour of European Union Institutions

13:30 – 15:30

Seminar Programme

Seminar One: European and international studies
Venue: Committee of the Regions

The position of Europe in a changing world

The European Union has long been viewed as “an economic giant, but a political pygmy” on the world stage. Is this still the case, and if so, is it bound to be so? To change that, the European Union has recently reformed its institutions. With the entry into force of the Lisbon treaty, the European External Action Service was established. Now operational, this new instrument will be put to the test. But will that be sufficient to allow the EU to weigh in on the world stage? The EU's leadership on issues like climate change has been seriously challenged, with the US and China appearing as the decisive actors. On global financial regulation, Europe also suffered partial setbacks. And old divisions - on relations with neighbours and the use of military power - might well resurface. In a year that may prove eventful, will the EU emerge again as a pole of stability in a fast changing geopolitical context? Or will it be engulfed in the turmoil building up at its borders? Can institutional solutions make up for political will?

Speakers:

  •
Pr Sven Biscop, senior fellow, Egmont institute for international relations visiting professor, College of Europe
  • Christiane Hoehn, adviser to the European Union Counter-terrorism Coordinator Gilles de Kerchove, Council of the EU
  • Julio Arias-Camison, assistant to David O'Sullivan, Chief Operation Officer of the European External Action Service
  • Moderator: Toby Vogel , external affairs reporter, European Voice
13:30 – 15:30

Seminar Two: Business and Law
Venue: Committee of the Regions

Comparing business environments in Europe, the US and Asia

Europe is said to be lagging behind other regions of the world in its capacity for innovation and its culture of entrepreneurship. Asia's importance for the world economy is growing, and the US is still the driving economic force. How should Europeans adapt to face the challenges of global competition, ageing societies, climate change and recession? What values should Europe preserve? What kind of regulatory framework does Europe need and how will it affect competitiveness? Has deregulation reached its limits? Or can a new framework shape a new culture?

Speakers:

  • Dr Salome Cisnal de Ugarte, adjunct professor of international trade at IE law school in madrid
  • Pr Samuel van den Bergh, visiting professor, Asia-Europe Institute, Malaya University
  • David Lawsky, Senior media adviser, FIPRA
  • Moderator: Simon Taylor, news editorEuropean Voice
