EU Studies Fair 2011
Report from 2010 EU Studies Fair - Mastering the EU education market
Programme
Day 1: Friday 11 February 2011
| 10:00 – 12:00 | Student tour of European Union Institutions |
| 13:30 – 15:30 |
Seminar One: European and international studies The European Union has long been viewed as “an economic giant, but a political pygmy” on the world stage. Is this still the case, and if so, is it bound to be so? To change that, the European Union has recently reformed its institutions. With the entry into force of the Lisbon treaty, the European External Action Service was established. Now operational, this new instrument will be put to the test. But will that be sufficient to allow the EU to weigh in on the world stage? The EU's leadership on issues like climate change has been seriously challenged, with the US and China appearing as the decisive actors. On global financial regulation, Europe also suffered partial setbacks. And old divisions - on relations with neighbours and the use of military power - might well resurface. In a year that may prove eventful, will the EU emerge again as a pole of stability in a fast changing geopolitical context? Or will it be engulfed in the turmoil building up at its borders? Can institutional solutions make up for political will? Speakers:
