Commissioner Margot Wallström argues that single market freedoms and basic social rights are put on an equal footing in the Laval judgment (Letters, 17-23 April). She claims that this alleged balance is due to the fact that the court has taken note of the Charter of Fundamental Rights. The charter is made legally binding in the Lisbon treaty. Wallström also concludes that the Lisbon treaty is good for workers.
