Kristalina Georgieva, European Commissioner for international co-operation, humanitarian aid and crisis response, for leading the Commission's response to disasters in Pakistan and Haiti.

EU Official of the Year 2010

Jean-Claude Trichet, president of the European Central Bank, for how he has steered the European Central Bank through this year's crisis, preserving the central bank's independence while making some significant policy adjustments.

National politician of the year 2010

David Cameron and Nick Clegg, Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister of the United Kingdom,  for their decision to form a coalition government that freed Cameron from his Eurosceptic rightwing and put the UK in step with the norm in Europe.

MEP of the year 2010

Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert, for leading the European Parliament to use the new powers conferred to it by the Lisbon Treaty to reject a deal struck by the Council and the Commission with the United States administration on the SWIFT dossier, the information on bank transfers, and secure safeguards for EU citizens.

Inspiration of the year 2010

The Spanish football team, for bringing football's World Cup back to Europe.

 

The full list of nominees as 'Europeans of the Year 2010' is available here.The results of the public vote in which visitors are asked to select one nominee per category who they think deserves special recognition were announced at a gala dinner held on Tuesday, 30 November at the Palais de la Bourse in Brussels.
